Mount Rushmore and Crazy Horse in the Black Hills, SD (American Journey)

Anyone who has been to Sturgis and has ridden through the Black Hills and the surrounding areas knows what I am talking about when I say it is an outstanding ride! Each turn gets on the road gives you a more outstanding view then the last. It's an incredible place and worth spending 4 or 5 days at.

Mount Rushmore is majestic and awe inspiring. The park is set up and kept very well. There is a museum, Sculptor's Studio and shows the history of the monument, how it came to be and why it looks as it does. It's a great experience and all Americans should get there.

Look close at the rocks. You can see the drill marks where they put the dynamite in when they blasted the mountain.

My vote for the next president on Mount Rushmore!
(No not me, Reagan...although?)

(Actually there officially will not be another president added ever).

Crazy Horse is very cool! It has been in construction for 50 years. It was started by ONE man who was hired by the Lakota Indians to build it. The Lakota wanted the white man to know that they have great heros too, (as the white man does on Mount Rushmore). Ziolkoski (the sculptor), believed in the free enterprise system and felt the Crazy Horse should be a nonprofit project built by the interested public and not by the taxpayers. How great it would be if more people felt this way! He turned down 10 million dollars in federal funding over the years.

You can fit all 4 presidents in Mount Rushmore inside of Crazy Horses head. That's how big this is!

The artist also sculpted the horses below.

Hi Frank:
Amazing and beautiful pictures you took of Mount Rushmore. My only view of this monument was in the movie "North by Northwest", so your pics made it real. What kind of camera are you using? Great story of your windy journey through SD and finding the Yankee bar! Hope you had a chance to see the ceremonies last night for the last home game at the Stadium.
Continued safe travels. Look forward to your next post. AJP.

Thx. I'm using a SONY Cybershot. There's not much room in the bike for much else. I am very happy with it. I'm glad you enjoyed the pix. I was able to see part of the last game but not all the ceremonies. I'm sure someone home recorded it.
